What is HTMA?
Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a laboratory test that measures selected mineral and elemental concentrations in a small hair sample, reflecting roughly your last three months of hair growth. A practitioner interprets the patterns and relationships between elements alongside your history, symptoms and lifestyle — it isn't a diagnosis, it's a map.
The basics
Quick answers before you go deeper
What sample is required?
A small hair sample, clipped close to the scalp from a few areas of the head.
Does it hurt?
No — it's comparable to a small trim and takes just a couple of minutes.
How much hair?
A small amount, similar to what's lost during a routine haircut.
What does the laboratory measure?
Concentrations of selected minerals and elements, and the ratios between them.
What happens afterward?
You receive your report and meet Valerie online to review it together.
What gets measured
Categories, not just single numbers
Macro minerals
The minerals your body needs in the largest amounts, and a useful starting point for understanding overall mineral balance.
Trace elements
Present in much smaller amounts, but relevant to how the macro minerals are used and balanced against one another.
Mineral ratios
The relationships between elements — not just single values — are often where the more useful patterns appear.
Samples are processed by Trace Elements, Inc. (TEI). The exact panel of elements included in your report is confirmed as part of your HTMA package.
What HTMA is not
HTMA does not diagnose thyroid disease, adrenal dysfunction, hormone disorders, infertility, depression, or any other medical condition, and it cannot confirm a specific nutrient deficiency on its own. It is not a replacement for blood testing or the diagnostic tools your doctor may use. If you have symptoms that concern you, please speak with your doctor.
