When you feel like your body is asking for more information

These experiences don't prove a mineral imbalance on their own — but they're often what brings women to HTMA in the first place, looking for a more personalised angle on their nutrition and daily habits.

  • Feeling depleted, even after rest
  • Persistent low energy that's hard to explain
  • Carrying high stress for an extended period
  • Difficulty feeling fully recovered
  • Curiosity about your own mineral balance
  • Wanting more personalised nutrition insight

What is HTMA?

Not a diagnosis. A map.

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) reads the mineral patterns in a small hair sample from roughly your last three months of growth. It isn't a diagnosis — think of it as a map. Read alongside your symptoms, health history and lifestyle, it can offer insight into how your minerals relate to the way your body is functioning, and where small, targeted changes in nutrition and daily habits may help you feel more like yourself.

What sample is required?

A small hair sample, clipped close to the scalp from a few areas of the head.

Does it hurt?

No — it's comparable to a small trim and takes just a couple of minutes.

How much hair?

A small amount, similar to what's lost during a routine haircut.

What does the laboratory measure?

Concentrations of selected minerals and elements, and the ratios between them.

What happens afterward?

You receive your report and meet Valerie online to review it together.

What it's useful for

What HTMA can help you explore

  • Your mineral patterns and how key elements relate to one another
  • Relationships between selected minerals rather than single values in isolation
  • Your exposure to certain measured elements
  • Nutritional context to discuss alongside your diet
  • Patterns worth exploring further with diet and lifestyle changes

HTMA does not diagnose disease and should not replace appropriate medical testing or care. If you have symptoms that concern you, please speak with your doctor.

The transformation

What actually changes

Before

  • Nine supplements in the cupboard and no real idea which are doing anything.
  • Your labs came back “normal.”
  • Every piece of nutrition advice you read was written for someone else's body.

After

  • You know which minerals your body is running low on and which are sitting high.
  • You know the three things to change this month and which supplements to stop buying.
  • You have a written plan you can bring to your doctor.
  • You stop guessing.

What gets tested

A pattern across categories of elements

Rather than one number, HTMA reports look at how different categories of elements relate to each other.

Macro minerals

The minerals your body needs in the largest amounts, and a useful starting point for understanding overall mineral balance.

Trace elements

Present in much smaller amounts, but relevant to how the macro minerals are used and balanced against one another.

Mineral ratios

The relationships between elements — not just single values — are often where the more useful patterns appear.

Samples are processed by Trace Elements, Inc. (TEI). The exact panel of elements included in your report is confirmed as part of your HTMA package.

This is for you if

Your labs came back “fine.” You're doing the protein, the sleep, the magnesium everyone recommends — and nothing has moved. You don't want another protocol. You want to know what your body is actually short on before you buy one more thing.

That's true whether you're postpartum and still waiting to feel like yourself, planning a pregnancy and want a baseline first, under long-term stress with no real recovery, training hard and hitting a wall — or just depleted, with no single label for why.

You might especially relate if you...

  • You've been feeling depleted and want additional context to explore
  • You're navigating a demanding period of life and want extra support
  • You're postpartum and interested in nutritional recovery
  • You're planning a pregnancy and want a nutritional baseline before you start trying
  • You're between pregnancies and haven't felt fully recovered from the first
  • You want to discuss mineral patterns with a qualified practitioner

HTMA may not be your first step if...

  • You have urgent or severe symptoms that need attention now
  • You suspect an untreated medical condition
  • You are looking for a diagnosis rather than additional context
  • You need emergency or urgent medical care

Planning a pregnancy?

Pregnancy and breastfeeding draw heavily on your mineral stores — and for many women, those reserves were never full to begin with. Most people only start looking at their nutrition once they're already pregnant, or once they're already flat on the floor at six months postpartum.

Mineral Mapping before conception gives you a starting point: a clear picture of where your minerals sit now, while you still have time and space to build reserves through food and a targeted, personalised plan — rather than trying to catch up during pregnancy or afterwards.

It's also useful between pregnancies, when the reserves from the first one may not have been rebuilt.

This is nutritional and educational support. It is not fertility treatment, prenatal care, or a substitute for either — any plan should be coordinated with your midwife or doctor.

Your report is data. Interpretation gives it context.

Ratios, patterns and context matter more than any single value. Valerie considers your results together with the history, symptoms and lifestyle information you share — rather than reading the report as a stand-alone answer.

The major obstacle I always found was the lack of information on what treatment to use, or how to approach the issue from the root.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is an HTMA test and what does it measure?

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a laboratory test that measures the concentrations of selected minerals and elements in a small hair sample. The report shows individual levels and relationships between elements, called mineral ratios. These results are considered alongside your symptoms, health history, diet and lifestyle; they are not a diagnosis on their own.

What can an HTMA test show?

An HTMA test can show the measured mineral and elemental patterns in your submitted hair sample, including relative levels and ratios. Mineral Mapping uses those patterns to guide a personalised discussion about nutrition, lifestyle and appropriate next steps. It cannot determine the cause of a symptom or confirm a medical condition.

Is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis accurate and scientifically valid?

Laboratories can measure minerals and elements in hair, but that does not make every interpretation of those measurements scientifically settled. Hair analysis has recognised uses in some research and exposure settings, while its use for assessing nutritional status remains debated and has important limitations. We therefore use HTMA as complementary information alongside your history, symptoms, lifestyle and relevant medical testing — never as a stand-alone diagnostic test.

How is an HTMA test different from a blood test?

Blood and hair tests provide different information and are not interchangeable. Blood tests measure what is circulating at the time of collection and are commonly used to diagnose or monitor medical conditions. HTMA measures selected elements present in the submitted hair sample as it grew. It does not replace blood work or medical assessment.

How much does an HTMA test cost?

The HTMA Essential package costs €300, and the HTMA Complete package costs €450. Both include laboratory analysis, a detailed questionnaire, a private results consultation and a personalised PDF plan. The Complete package adds longer follow-up support, a second consultation and a structured 90-day roadmap.

How long does HTMA testing take?

The full timeline includes delivery of your kit, return shipping to the laboratory, laboratory processing and scheduling your results consultation. Kit delivery and laboratory processing both vary by country and shipping route, so total timing is not fixed — Valerie will give you a realistic estimate for your specific location before you order.
