Before you start
Once you begin your HTMA package, you'll receive written instructions and everything needed to collect your sample. In general:
- Wash your hair as you normally would in the days before collection, avoiding heavy styling products right beforehand.
- Have a clean pair of scissors and the collection envelope provided ready.
Taking the sample
A small amount of hair is clipped close to the scalp, usually from two or three different areas of the head (for example, the nape of the neck), so the sample reflects overall growth rather than one isolated area. The amount required is small — comparable to what falls away during a routine trim — and the process is not painful.
Dyed, bleached, or chemically treated hair
Chemical treatments such as colouring, bleaching, or perming can affect certain readings. This doesn't necessarily rule out testing, but it's important to mention any treatments when you begin your HTMA, so it can be factored into how your results are interpreted.
Sending your sample
Once collected, your sample is placed in the provided envelope and sent to the laboratory using the shipping instructions included in your package. From there, analysis typically takes some weeks before your results are ready to review.
